The Tow/Run switch should be placed in the TOW position under the following conditions:

Before Towing the Vehicle

Place the Tow/Run switch in the TOW position to disable all motor braking functions, thus preventing possible damage that could occur to the vehicle or electrical components if the vehicle is towed while the walk-away braking motor braking function is operating.

Before Disconnecting or Connecting Battery Cables

Place the Tow/Run switch in the TOW position to turn off power to the vehicle electrical system, thus preventing severe arcing and possible battery explosion as the battery cables are disconnected.

For Long Term Storage

Place the Tow/Run switch in the TOW position to turn off power to the vehicle electrical system, thus preventing vehicle electrical components from discharging the batteries.

Battery Maintenance

Battery maintenance is one of the most common challenges in our industry. With the cost involved we always recommend maintaining your batteries correctly. We see customers over fill their batteries, this causes issues in their batteries and the life of the batteries are reduced. Some customers are saying that they prefer gas carts because of the maintenance. Consider this carefully because gas carts need maintenance too.

We took the following information from Trojan Battery Sales, they recommend the following:

BATTERY MAINTENANCE GUIDE

SAFETY:

  • Always wear protective clothing, gloves and goggles when handling batteries
  • If acid contacts your skin or eyes, flush with water immediately
  • Keep flames, sparks and metal objects away from batteries
  • Charge batteries in a well-ventilated area
  • To avoid short circuits do not lay objects on top of battery
  • Check that all cable connections to the terminal are properly tightened; connections that are too tight or too loose could result in post breakage, meltdown or fire

INSPECTION & CLEANING:

  • Keep batteries clean and dry from residue
  • Check that all vent caps are tight
  • Use a solution of baking soda and water to clean if there is acid residue on batteries or corrosion on the terminals
  • Protective spray or petroleum jelly should be applied to terminals to reduce corrosion

STORAGE:

  • Batteries should be fully charged prior to and during storage
  • Never store discharged batteries
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place
  • Recharge batteries before putting them back into service

WATERING:

Diagram A

  • ADD WATER, NEVER ACID, TO CELLS (distilled water recommended)
  • DO NOT OVERWATER (This will cause the batteries to overflow when charging and damage cables, frame on carts without battery tub and garage floor)
  • Before charging the batteries, only add water if the plates are exposed. Add just enough water to cover the plates, then charge the batteries.
  • Once fully charged, add water to the proper level as indicated in Diagram A
  • For fully charged standard deep-cycle batteries, add water to level of 1/8” (3 mm) below bottom of vent well (see diagram A)
  • For fully charged Plus Series batteries, add water to the maximum water level indicator.

Diagram B

  • After watering, secure vent caps back on batteries
  • For faster, easier and safer battery watering, ask about Trojan’s HydroLink Watering System or Club Car’s Preferred watering system supplier.

If you are uncertain about maintaining your batteries contact us or drop by and we can show you. Batteries are not cheap and if we can help you get the longest life in your batteries we are glad to help. We also offer free water check days on a Tuesday and Thursday morning and also offer a service plan where we service your cart (see Maintenance plan) every 6 weeks.

Charging your cart

Carts should be charged every day if you use the cart for longer distances. Use your Battery Gauge if present to determine if the carts needs a charge. Most manufacturers will recommend daily charging after every use but only charge the cart once a day for at least 8 hours.

ERIC Charger Status Indicator

Service

Most manufactures recommend servicing your cart every 6 months, when the cart is new this will be sufficient but as they get older it may need some extra maintenance.

Tire Pressure

Check your tire pressure regularly, we see a lot of cart that have below the recommended pressure.

How Important is Tire Pressure?

The rubber your golf or utility vehicle rides on takes on an unprecedented role in car control, safety and comfort. It is crucial to ensure the vehicle’s tires are inflated to their proper tire pressure. Although tires have a MAX tire pressure rating molded into the sidewall of the tire, this does not mean this is the pressure the tires should be inflated to. Club Car qualifies each tire through rigorous testing to establish the proper tire pressure to meet performance, safety and stability requirements for our vehicles.

The proper Pounds per Square Inch (PSI) can generally be found inside Owner’s Manual (OM), Maintenance and Service (M&S) manual or the Approved Tire and Wheel Matrix available at www.clubcar.com. To keep tabs on your tire pressure, you can purchase an air pressure gauge at any auto parts store. Let’s look into the cons of improper tire inflation.

Problems with Over-inflation:

If a tire is over inflated, it will become stiff and rigid and its footprint (the rubber that contacts the road) will be greatly reduced. This will decrease the driver’s ability to control the vehicle and puts the tire more at risk of damage when coming into contact with potholes or debris on the road. Excess tire pressure will also cause increased tire tread wear in the center of the tire.

Problems with Under-inflation:

An underinflated tire can cause numerous problems for a vehicle. The first is that the tire will lose its form and there will be an increase of rubber meeting the roadway, which can reduce the life of a tire. Other major issues with under-inflation are a reduction in energy efficiency or fuel economy due to the extra power needed to turn the soft rubber. Finally you will deal with reduced vehicle control. A properly inflated tire will allow for precise cornering and handling, while low tires can end up causing a bumpy, uncomfortable ride.

Proper tire inflation means that you’ll have the best possible control of your vehicle and optimize energy or fuel efficiency. To ensure your car’s tires are properly inflated find out what their recommended PSI is and then use a quality air pressure gauge to measure it from time to time. If
you find that your tire pressure is low, quickly put air in the tires to the recommended pressure, but don’t overfill!

Bushings

We get a lot of customers that neglect to check their bushings, it is common amongst all golf carts that the bushings deteriorate. Keep an eye on the cart and when that start cracking it is recommended to change them. We sell the kits if you want to install them yourself or we can install them for you.

Wheel Alignment

If your Club Car is wearing unevenly in the front it is usually bushings but if your bushings are good it probably is your wheel alignment that is off. Contact us for an alignment/checkup.
